Saturn History

GM established its Saturn brand in 1985 to become more competitive against Japanese imports. The automaker had a production plant built in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and used its own dealership network that offered a no-haggle, single-price purchase system. Saturns became popular with younger buyers and those looking for smaller, efficient vehicles.

Saturn's first models, available in 1990, were the SC coupe, SL sedan, and SW wagon. These models received regular revisions throughout the ensuing two decades. Saturn added a popular compact SUV, the Vue, to its lineup in 2002, later offering a mild hybrid version. Later, customers could purchase the Relay version of GM's minivan or the Outlook version of its "Lambda" series crossover vehicle.

Twice, in 1994 and 1999, Saturn invited owners across the country to "homecoming" events at its Tennessee plant. An estimated 38,000 people from 47 states attended the first gathering.

As part of its reorganization following bankruptcy in 2009, GM decided to cease production of its Saturn line. The Saturn plant was retooled for Chevrolet production, and Chevy also took over the former Vue to be rebranded as the Chevy Captiva, which is now produced in Canada and available only for fleet use.
