Saab History

Swedish automobile company Saab, originating as a firm manufacturing aircraft parts, was formed in 1947 to create a small car. Distribution of Saabs began in the United States in 1957. Being an exclusively Swedish product, Saab autos found a very small niche among American fans who could afford them. But Saabs were never available in the numbers of other premium performance automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Thus, sales remained low throughout Saabs presence in America.

In 1989, General Motors took control of Saab and made the brand one of its subsidiaries. GM's first Saab 900 was based on the Opel Vectra, a move that angered and disappointed many Saab fans in America who had come to appreciate their Swedish-made autos. Another product of this relationship was the Saab 9-7x, an upscale version of GM's TrailBlazer/Envoy SUV.

GM sold Saab to Dutch company Spyker in 2010 following its reorganization after bankruptcy. Saab itself went bankrupt in 2011 and has since been transferred to another Swedish company, Nevs, which is attempting to relaunch the brand with models including an electric-powered car. Saab dealerships in the US began closing in January 2010, and the vehicles are no longer available for purchase here.
