Pontiac History

General Motors purchased the Oakland Motor Company in 1908. In 1926 GM launched Pontiac, intending to produce them as companion products to the Oakland line. But Pontiacs outsold Oaklands to such a large number, that they ceased production of Oaklands by 1933. For most of its existence after that, GM positioned Pontiac as a performance-based alternative to Chevrolet, leaving Buick and Cadillac to be logical steps up in luxury and price.

Pontiac held a strong influence in the muscle-car craze of the 1960s and 70s, introducing the legendary GTO and later the Firebird to compete with Ford’s Mustang. The fuel crisis eventually made things difficult for the performance-oriented brand, and Pontiac sales suffered as GM tried to scale down the models to be lighter, less powerful, and more fuel efficient.

In the 1980s and 90s Pontiac tried new strategies to win back customers. With smaller models like the Fiero and increases in performance due to lower fuel prices, auto buyers turned to Pontiac once again. However, as GM headed toward bankruptcy and reorganization in 2008, the corporation announced it would be eliminating the Pontiac brand and selling off Saturn. The final Pontiacs produced were the G6 model.
