Plymouth History

Chrysler introduced the first Plymouth automobile as a lower-cost alternative to its own models in 1928. Because of the timing of this introduction, Plymouth survived as a brand during the Great Depression when many other automakers ceased to exist. The company continued competing strongly with Chevrolet and Dodge through the 1960s and 70s, even contributing to the muscle car craze.

Into the 70s and 80s, Plymouth fell into a similar pattern across the auto industry - taking on scaled-down versions of other pricier cars created by its parent company. Chrysler tried to revive the brand several times, but with little success. Plymouth's Voyager version of the Dodge Caravan did contribute greatly to the minivan revolution, and it’s one-of-a-kind Prowler throwback racer was intended as the herald of a new era for Plymouth.

However, Chrysler's merger with Daimler-Benz in 1998 spelled the end of the brand. The final Plymouth automobile, the Neon compact, was produced in 2001.
