Volkswagen was founded on May 28, 1937, by the government of Germany. The name was originally known as Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH, then later shortened to Voolkswagenwerk, which when translated means "The People's Car Company."
Ferdinand Porsche was the engineer Hitler called on to design a vehicle that was speedy but affordable. After the first Volkswagen vehicle was released in 1939, World War II began, and the manufacturing plant was later destroyed. But the "Beetle" had already made a grand entrance, and after the war became a worldwide phenomenon. By the 1960s Volkswagen had been rebuilt, denationalized, and has since produced such models as the Beetle, Rabbit, Golf and more recently the Passat. The company has partnered with Chrysler to offer its entry into the minivan market, the Routan.
The Volkswagen logo was first designed in 1938 with a black V sitting atop a black W, but saw some minor changes just before World War II. After the war, the logo was reversed, with white letters and a black background in the circle. A more modern version shows shadowing to create a 3D effect, with white letters on a blue background.
