Subaru of America was founded in 1968. Its parent company is Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan. Over the years the automaker has forged relationships with Isuzu, Toyota, and General Motors. For a period of time, Subaru and Isuzu shared a production plant in Lafayette, Illinois, but that facility has now been taken completely by Subaru after Isuzu's departure from the US market. A new joint product with Toyota is the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ rear-wheel driven sports coupe.
Subaru carved a niche for itself against difficult competition from other Japanese makes, having arrived late to the US market compared to Honda, Toyota, and Nissan. Its models have come to be known for their all-wheel drive technologies, standard on most models, and for their frequent use of "boxer" or flat-styled engines, in which the pistons operate laterally instead of in a V-shape or upright position. Subarus are especially popular in regions of the US where roads are difficult or in icy and snowy climates.
Today, Subaru produces a number of rugged, mostly all-wheel drive vehicles for the US market: Impreza, WRX, and Legacy sedans; Forester, XV Crosstrek, and Outback wagons, and Tribeca SUV.
