The first auto by Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT) was produced in 1899. The company we know as FIAT today is owned by Fiat S.p.A., which took full ownership of Chrysler after that company's bankruptcy following the 2009 American auto industry crisis. The parent company recently announced it will form a new corporation, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, by the end of 2014.
Fiat's presence in the US dates to the opening of its own plant in New York in 1909. The company's luxury cars, early on some of the most expensive autos for sale, performed well in America through the 1970s, but suffered from the gas and oil crisis. Unable to compete with US auto buyers' changing tastes toward larger vehicles in the 1980s, Fiat withdrew from the American market in 1984.
Due to Fiat's parent company's acquisition of Chrysler, as well as a trend toward small, nimble "city cars" in this market, Fiat has reentered the American auto world as of 2011 with its 500 line of subcompact sedans and coupes. These new US models feature a turbocharged "MultiAir" four-cylinder engine that combines both power and fuel economy.
