Chrysler has transitioned from a brand sitting atop Dodge and Plymouth in terms of value and luxury, to becoming part of Fiat Motors while maintaining its historical ties to Dodge and Jeep. Over the years Chrysler has partnered with Mitsubishi and Volkswagen in its car and minivan offerings. The 200 midsize sedan has taken on a bold new style. The 300 luxury sedan offers greater levels of comfort and performance. The Town & Country minivan will soon make way for its successor, the Pacifica. Walter Chrysler founded his auto company in 1923 in Detroit, eventually absorbing the Dodge car brand. Chrysler would go on to introduce the Plymouth and DeSoto brands to US car buyers, as well. Over the years, Chrysler mimicked GM's successful tiered system of auto marketing, positioning Chrysler models as the pinnacle of their luxury offerings.
Chrysler barely avoided bankruptcy in the 1980s, thanks to the leadership of Lee Iacocca and their acquiring AMC, Jeep, and Eagle. The company revolutionized Jeep into a brand targeted toward progressive drivers seeking a rugged, outdoorsy-style, but with refined qualities. Chrysler also had to overcome a period of issues surrounding the quality of their vehicles, struggling to compete against GM and Ford for American market share. A brief period of partnership with Daimler-Benz beginning in the late 1990s did not bear the success either company hoped for.
Today, following the auto industry crisis of 2008-2010, Chrysler is a subsidiary of Fiat Motors. The autos under its brand are limited to only three: The 200 and 300 sedans, and the Town and Country, a luxury version of the first-ever minivan, the Dodge Caravan. Chrysler also produces a high-performance version of the 300 sedan bearing the SRT badge.
