In November 1911, racing driver Louis Chevrolet joined forces with William Durant, founder and former head of General Motors, to create the Chevrolet brand, now the fourth largest brand in the automotive industry. Durant had the opportunity to purchase Ford before founding Chevrolet, but that deal never came through, and Durant was let go from his position at GM.
Durant’s Chevrolet was profitable enough by 1916 for him to purchase a controlling interest in General Motors. Durant then merged Chevrolet and GM, with Chevrolet as a separate division. Durant once again became president of General Motors. Durant’s main goal was to enter the market as a worthy adversary of Ford Motor Company and complete with their early lines of cars and trucks.
Durant introduced the famous Chevy "bowtie" emblem in 1913.There are many theories as to what inspired it - from a wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel where Durant once stayed, to a similar shape copied from a Coalettes logo. The Parisian hotel wallpaper theory is the most likely to be true.
Chevy is very well known for its hard-working trucks, cars, and SUVs, such as the Camaro, Corvette, Equinox, Cruze, Silverado, Malibu, and more recently the all-electric Volt.
