Acura vehicles entered the US market in 1986 as Honda Motors sought to compete against other luxury car brands. Acura quickly gained market share and customer loyalty due to their cars’ reliability, performance, and available features. The Acura brand has significantly reinvented itself to stay competitive and gain new drivers. For years the TL was a popular sports sedan. The TLX has now taken its place. Car buyers' move toward crossovers has made the RDX and MDX common sights on our roadways. Because Acura vehicles are known for endurance and performance, owners should plan to keep driving them for many years. Honda introduced its first two Acura models – the Legend executive sedan and Integra compact sedan and coupe – to US auto buyers in 1986. Within four years, Acuras were outselling Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus, the latter of which was Toyota's response to Honda's luxury-import challenge. Acura gained a loyal following among both affluent motorists and younger drivers looking for more features and options in their cars.
Over the decades since its introduction, Acura has reinvented itself and pushed the boundaries of both style and performance. Their NSX redefined the "supercar," with its aluminum body, high-output V6 engine, and Honda-based reliability. Acura also entered the luxury SUV and crossover markets with their MDX and RDX models, based respectively on the Honda Pilot and CR-V platforms. In an effort to remain competitive, Acura has not been reluctant to discontinue models, even some that were popular with owners. Both the Integra and RSX have gone away, though favorites with younger drivers. The NSX was discontinued in 2005, and supercar enthusiasts have been waiting for a new version since. But Acura fans finally have a reason to celebrate. A new NSX will be assembled in Ohio and become available in 2015.
